Hardwood floor question

Linflas

Lifer
I am looking for some information from other folks that have down their own hardwood flooring, specifically regarding stairways Like most modern construction the stairways in our house are all carpeted. The main level is now all hardwood except for the kitchen area which we have still not decided what we want to do with it. We now want to remove the carpeting from the stairs going down to the basement. For now my wife is just planning on painting them and we will put a hardwood veneer on the mid point landing. Ultimately I would like to hardwood them and am curious if anyone here has done something similar and what your approach was?

Try the newsgroup on usenet alt.home.repair you'll get all the info you need.

Replacing treads and risers shouldn't be too difficult, but this will be a high traffic area that wiil force the traffic into one likely path right down the middle and as such will see a lot of wear. It also could be dangerous in your stocking feet. That is why you see carpeted stair runners in the middle of hardwood stairs.

we have brazillian cherry hardwood floors everywhere. have it in the kitchen..works great (poly finish)

we have wood stairs as well.

you can do what ever you want!

if you put in wood floors, be sure the lumber is at the correcxt humidity, and our builder stored the flooring in the house for several weeks prior to installation to make sure
it had a stable water content. reason is to prevent expansion or shrinking of the floor pieces once installed

Here is a good place to get started.

I am about to start doing our 1/2 bath to see how the brazilian cherry looks. If all goes well, then the kitchen, stairs and hallways are getting the cherry also.

I hear doing stairs is a real pain. But having someone do them for you will cost about $100 per stair.
