Hello hardware gurus

I'm 17 years old, going to start building a new linux box. I'm looking for a hardware supplier that sells it cheap, no middle man (ie. Future Shop *shudder*). If anyone could give me a few links to some web pages to suppliers in lower British Columbia, vancouver area that would be great. Thanks very much.

my votes go to:

NetLink Computers - in Burnaby, on Kingsway & Royal Oak. Try not to go into the store and order if you don't have to, it's a freakin' mess (just buy online, and drop in to pick it up).

A-Power Computers - Burnaby, on Boundary & Hastings. Richmond I'm not sure. EXCELLENT service, and definitely one of the lowest prices for any components you want.

Ignore all the advice above. I know from experience that Netlink (NCIX) will send your stuff in pieces (they do a horrible packing job), and Atic has the worst reputation in the country. I have heard some good things about A-power however, and will be buying stuff from them shortly (stay tuned).

Go to your local 7-11 or grocery store and look for the free magazine stands (that usually have the real estate magazines in them). There's a free computer magazine called "Vancouver Computes!" which has a bunch of ads and prices inside (as well as some decent articles).

Looking inside this month's copy, here are some stores and links:

www.FlyComputers.com (they have 2 stores, one in Vancouver at 57th and Cambie, and the other in Burnaby at the corner of East Hastings and Willingdon).

In Richmond there's MicRock Computer Inc. (www.microck.com) 5060 Hollymount Gate

Another Richmond company is Addax Computer Inc. (www.addax.bc.ca) near Ikea Furniture on Bridgeport Road.

Another place I'd personally recommend is Techmaster Computer Ltd. in Port Moody. I bought my motherboard and processor there, and just recently bought 256mb of Micron ram there for 100 bucks (cdn obviously, including taxes).

EDIT: Of all the places mentioned above, their prices are usually within 10 bucks of each other on parts in the $200 to $300 range, so the one that's closest would probably be the best (but phone around just in case). I like doing business with an actual store rather than an online place, because I have somewhere I can take any problems with the parts (and I know that they must follow Canadian and BC laws).

I've tended to check out A-Power and they have been fine for me. Especially if you know what you are doing. Then you can just cash and carry it. However, an aquaintance of mine that I recommended to A-Power did not seem to have the best experience with them. He was a relative newbie and had some issues. I'm not too sure how much of the problem was my aquaintance's attitude or the people he was dealing with. In any case, he didn't think too highly of A-Power after that.

I actually bought my box from ICI Computers in Richmond or www.icicomputer.com. They are slightly more expensive that your dirt cheap place but they seem very stable and have decent after service.
