Hardware Raid

General question. I will be seting up hardware raid on a dell poweredge 1850 server. It is currently a production server running 2003 server. Will I be able to do this by breaking the raid, putting in the new hardware. Then booting up and letting the raid build? Or will I have to start out with fresh drives and set this up during the OS install.

Thanks

Right now it is a software raid mirror. It has dual SCSI drives. I have the dell hardware raid kit which includes a new riser card, and the hardware raid key (just a little plugin chip that activates the hardware raid) And the memory module that goes into the riser car.

All I am wanting to do is switch it from a software raid, to a hardware raid.

sounds like a different controller altogether. If so, you will have to create the array all over again.

if it's the same controller chipset, you may be able to copy the config from the hard drives to the controller.

what r the specs on the software and hardware controllers?
