Is there a difference between the stanard SMA connector and the RP-SMA connector used by wireless ethernet? I need an adapter that goes from male SMA to bulk female N connector.

Yes there is.

The "RP" indicates that the gender is opposite of the "normal" connector.

The Feds request/require/strongly suggest that an atypical connector be used on equipment operating in the non-licensed band to reduce the ability of the masses to freestyle on their equipment (limits the use of pigtails, amps & such) ... hence, the RP-TNC and RP-SMA.
