Hardware problems

I am tring to diagnose a problem for my friend. I haven't seen the computer, but the problem as explained to me is, computer screen turns red when scrolling down! also windows shut down and reboots often on its own. I am assuming this is a video card problem and that windows is acting crazy and needs a new install! doesn't sound like a virus or cpu problem to me. thanks.

Possibly a power supply issue as well. A spare power supply is always a good thing to have around, so buying one to test with isn't a bad idea. If you swap the video card, make sure it's one that will use similar power. Testing with a Geforce2 MX when an X1800 is the original card, there's not as much of a strain on the system, so it's not a "real world" test.
