I know these are questions about the OSes but i felt it was appropriate here because what's causing one to work and not the other is strictly a hardware problem.

I have two PCs. I'm trying to get my HD from my old PC to boot in my new computer, no luck so far.

I can get the new PC this far:

boots up, can get into bios fine
detects the drives
goes to "select which mode you want windows to start in"

regardless of which mode I select, it'll show the loading splash for windows for about half a second, then turn off and boot again.

however, if I use knoppix (a linux boot cd) it seems to runs fine.

windows booted fine on the old computer.

any ideas what could be causing this problem?

I've never tried to move a harddrive from one computer to another.
Unless the two computers are identical, I think you're going to have a problem when windows
expects to find certain hardware that's not there anymore. For example, video drivers..

Edit: I think you're going to have to reinstall windows on the new machine.

Ive moved hard drives before, its not that bad....you might be having a problem when windows loads the video driver or some driver. Unfortunatly it will be hard to uninstall/reinstall drivers you need without windows. This is a long shot, but try booting on the old computer and uninstalling drivers that are specific to certain pieces of hardware and using windows generic ones instead. Dont really know how easy this is or if it will work or anything, but its something

it's the same video card, actually.

the motherboard/cpu/ram/optical drives are different, but that's about it

You'll be forced to beg for an installation code too. I dislike XP vehemently!
