Whenever I run any sort of graphically intensive game it very frequently makes a noise such as

"click, vooooom"

and my game freezes for about 4 to 8 seconds and then everything is fine again.
This happens about every 30 to 60 seconds...

What could these be due too?

I have enough horse power, so to speak. I don't know what my exact specs are, but I know I have at least 512 MB of ram and the second or third best video card on the market as of right now, my CPU is around 3.2 gig.

(EDIT)

The first game being played is Deux Ex. It came out in 2000. The second game being played is Company of Heros, which the problem is a lot worse on.

How do you know you have enough "horse power" if you dont even know wtf is in your machine?

Easy way to find some info without me typing out way to much is use the dxdiag from your command prompt.

I just checked some of my specs and edited that post.

It's your HDD. Your power settings have it set to power down the HDD every minute of inactivity. Games are notorious for this because after the initial load, the HDD isn't really used much. But the time that the page file needs called up, the HDD has to be activated. But since it's powered down, the game has to wait for the HDD to spin up before it can access data.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > Power Options

In the "Power Schemes" Tab, look for "Turn off hard disks" Go to the drop down box and set it to "Never"

Click "Apply", and then "Ok." That should fix your problem.

Check your HDD SMART settings, setting it to power saving or quiet settings will still cause it to spin down and park the heads naturally, irregardless if you told windows to never turn you're hard drive off.

Hardware settings almost always trump software settings.

Hmmm and you have a tech cap on???

You dont know how much memory you have but you have "The second or third video card on the market" and "around" a 3.2  If you only have 512 MB memory Thats part of your problem. I think what we have here is an ID 1 oT error. Run a program like Everest Home and post your specs so at least you know what your talking about. People might be more inclined to help if you were not such a smartass.

BTW from what you post that is not even pony power. If it is Celeron 3.2 then forget it

How do I access those settings?

You should ask a mod to change your name from dofus3000 to doofus3000--it would be more fitting.

SMART settings are usually controlled in the BIOS.

And that is the last "technical" reply i will make in this thread. I will, however, reserve the right to openly flame and laugh ay you more.
