Hardware or Software RAID

what do you guys perfer?

my ide hdd is full .. so im thinking toss in a sata raid controller.. 2 250gb just for mirror...

do this in the hardware controller.. or use dynamic disk to accomplish it?

if i go the hardware route.. if 1 fails with the OS tell me the mirror is broken?

thanks

The only time you would ever use software RAID, is if it is your only choice. If there is a hardware solution available there is no decision to make.

VIA RAID is going to be a fakeraid software solution. I use Windows software RAID 1 without any performance issues. Notification is weak on the Windows solution, but you can rig something up. Notification is nonexistant on the VIA solution.

yes, you have serious perfomance issues, you just don't know it.

Hey this is a server thing, not a network thing! 😛

I honestly can't tell a difference before/after with Windows software RAID 1. Processor utilization hasn't gone up, either. The boxes I run it on are pretty slow, too. VIA's fakeraid was ok, too, except for the fact that it wouldn't kick a dying HD from the array making it quite useless for me.

If you're running a server, why wouldn't you pony up $$$ for a decent RAID controller? Unless this is just a home-based pr0n server.

you pretty much nailed it.. no jk its a home based pc that i use as a file server for mp3 and pics.. HOME PICS.. that i want access to on my modded xbox (home theater).. however if the pricing of something more enterprize is reasonable id like to get that for the experience factor.

what are you referring to? i honestly cant see the need for stripping in my network.. im running 100mb LAN.. and my xbox (the client i use most) cant be upgraded to 1000mb.. so thats really not possible.. if i expand and get a media center pc instead then that might be a solution.. do i really need stripping without a 1000mb.. cant my single ata133 ide 7200rpm 8mb buffer keep up with the network? this is a dedicated server that only serves as a file server and vpn (strictly for me).. and a very small website.. 10 hits a day MAX..

thanks everyone for the posts!
