I installed a Lite-On CD-RW as Master and set-up my Pioneer CD-ROM as a slave. Hopefully, I set this up correctly.

After installing my Lite-On CD-RW, windows XP pro recognized the manufacter name and model, however it refers to it as being a CD-ROM. My Pioneer CD-ROM is no where to be found. However, it was recognized prior to installing my CD-RW. There is no drive E.

Obviously, I would like the Lite-On to be recognized on drive E as a CD-RW and and my Pioneer on drive D.

Or maybe it's my fault. My Pioneer is a 106S. During installation of my Lite-On, I changed the Pioneer jumper from "reserve" to slave.

Also should I change anything in my BIOS?

Thanks for your help

Xp should see it as a cdrom, nothing more, if you hooked up a dvd then it will show dvd, but it doesn't show cdrw or anything like that .

I would set your cdrw to master like you have it and set your cdrom to slave and make sure it comes up in the bios, then everything should be fine. As for the drive letters i can't help you to much on that, I remember you could change them in 98 but not sure if you can in xp.

EDIT: if you got to properties then hardware tab, it should list the name and the model of every drive that xp sees.

do both drives show up in bios? if not its probably a jumper/cable issue

Probably not your problem, but is your master at the top of the chain? (the connection at the end of the IDE cable) See if your BIOS is set to auto on DMA/PIO modes. Just thought I'd add that.

ok .. you say you want the pioneer as d, and that you set it to slave? does this mean you have it on the master channel (slaved to your hd)? otherwise, it could be conflicting with your other drive (both set as slave).. in which case i believe the drive that's actually on the slave position on the cable is the one that gets picked (the middle plug) .. i could be wrong though.

check the cable and jumpers on the drive. theyre both probably set to slave .. in case you don't know, you're generally supposed to put the longer end of the cable (going from the middle plug) to the motherboard, the middle plug to the drive set as slave, and the remaining plug to the master drive. if you want the pioneer as d:, it should be set to master and on the end of the cable hooked to your secondary ide.

this assumes of course you have them both on secondary.. heh.. personally id put the faster cdrw as secondary master, and the other one as primary slave. this is generally better for on the fly copying ..

as for what xp calls it, it doesnt really matter as long as it works.. if it doesnt work, then worry about it :)

I am learning both how to work with XPpro and installation of hardware at the same time. However, I was the problem. In fine print on the drive label it states where the jumper slave is located. I didn't read the fine print before I installed it, and therefore I guessed which one was the slave. I was wrong. I changed it to the slave jumper and everything is fine. After this lesson I've learned to read the fine print on the label.

Thank you all for your help and in being so patient with a new learner.
