Hardware Modem for 9.99? Is this true or not?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3425954359&category=14925

I'm sick and tired of my software modem and Linux and I want a hardware modem but I just plunked some cash on a PSU. Now I decided to scour Ebay and I found that...

Are those the modems with the Ham-based chipsets? I'm trying to look for a real hardware modem that I won't need to go through the hassle of setting up ridiculous drivers for (I have the HAM based modem and all my efforts to get it to work have been to no avail - on top of that the modem is flaky and sucks 4 me 🙁 )

So....can anyone tell me if that is indeed a hardware modem, or if it just isn't 😉

No, this is a software modem- Intel 536EP based. I have one. On the flip side. I've never had any problems with it under either WinXP or Win2k. It's one of the better performing ones I've used to date, software or hardware.

Kinda sortof...they are inbetween the 2 from my Understanding. These seem to be Controllerless Modems which have software do the part of the controller, but the datapump is still hardware. HSP modems (alaWinModems) are 100% SOFTWARE Controlled

I'm using it too and I have a different experience...On top of very $h|7733 pings in games (like 3000+? I haven't played CS in god knows how long because somehow my modem lags for a while and then gets disconnected even though my rig [see sig] should easily have enough power to play CS and control the modem) it doesn't like Linux...

...therefore I don't like it 😉

Are all external Modems hardware modems or not? I'm eyeing this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3426101399&category=14920

And where would one plug External modems into out of curiosity? Or should I just stick with Internal ones?

The best way for external Hookups are via the Serial Port IMO and they have USB in Hard and Controllerless Based types

Looks like a software modem to me. I've made computers with this modem before... it does not work very well with linux.

compgeeks has 4 modems under ten bucks. (not shipped)
all brand new.
The Agere SV92P is on their web site and has newest drivers
Any good....I dunno
