Hardware log in Windows?

Does anyone know if Windows 2000/XP keeps a log of hardware that is connected and disconnected from the computer? I'm trying to determine whether or not a removable hard drive was connected to a computer at some point. I've looked through the Device Manager and nothing shows up, but the backup logs clearly show data being backed up to another drive that is not presently connected to the computer.

I don't know if Win keeps a log of USB connects/disconnects. IAC, do a search on the whole C drive for *.log and see what you find. If anything there is relevant, it should be easily spotted. Particularly check the backup log to see what entries are in there re. the suspected backup.
