Hardware issues

My roommate bought compenents to put together a computer. I put them all together for him. Everything worked fine at first then the computer started to randomly reboot.

Here is the system specs.
Abit KT7 non raid
Athlon 850
128megs ram
Enlight mid-tower case from www.unitedmicro.com(generic power supply i think)

When i got the parts I started the system up and noticed that the CPU voltage was set to 1.75V. I didn't remember that it was supposed to be that high. I set it to 1.65V. No big deal. The computer ran fine. Then it started to reboot about twice a day. I decided to bump the voltage back up to 1.75. The computer would freeze within 2 minutes of being in windows 2000. If I took the voltage back down to 1.65 it would work fine. Yesterday we started smelling that smell that happens when electronics fail. We realized that when my roommate installed his webcam, the cable somehow got into the grid where the power supply blows out hot air. It was preventing the fan from turning. I couldn't believe the grid for the power supply was big enough to fit a small cable in it.

Well after we noticed that I made him shutdown the system for a while for the power supply to cool off.

I currently have his computer cracking RC5 and it doesn't reboot or freeze at 1.70V immediately. That leads me to think that it is not the CPU. I bump the voltage up to 1.75 and it freezes.

I think it is either the motherboard and the power supply.

I am leaning towards power supply first off because united micro doesn't say anything about it and I have never heard of the power supply. Secondly we don't think the freezing started until he installed the webcam which prevented the fan from turning.

What do you guys think??

Jim

I think you're on the right track, suspecting the p.s. Swap it out w/ a good one, such as an Enermax 351P.

Agreed. Had a similar issue with an almost identical setup. I verified by getting a good model at a B&M store with a good return policy in case I was wrong.
