http://techreport.com/news/25878/nvidia-responds-to-amd-free-sync-demo

When asked about a potential VESA standard to enable dynamic refresh rates, Petersen had something very interesting to say: he doesn't think it's necessary, because DisplayPort already supports "everything required" for dynamic refresh rates via the extension of the vblank interval. That's why, he noted, G-Sync works with existing cables without the need for any new standards. Nvidia sees no need and has no plans to approach VESA about a new standard for G-Sync-style functionality—because it already exists.

Will be interesting to see something from a different website on this (as in, one in English) which looks at what exactly Vesa have accepted with regard to the standard.

They accepted the support of the "Extend MSA Tmg Param Ignore Option" as an optional feature.

I guess it's AMD specific and only supported by AMD right now.

If it's in the standard, then other vendors should also be able to implement it. That's how standards work. ;)

I thought FreeSync has already been a standard. And now it becomes a standard once again. And still no implementations?

And if/when it gets implemented, I will need a new monitor. A free one?

It's all very confusing

And what about DisplayPort on my 290. Is it going to support this "Extend DP1.2a MSA Tmg settings Ignore Option AMD"

or do I need a new FreeCard too?

It's not a mandatory feature of the standard.
You can compare it with DX11 DCL or 11.2 Tiled Ressourcen. Both are optional features vendors don't need to support to get certificated.

Meh, they're just Google Translate'ing the original story. Hopefully one of the big English-speaking sites will pick up on the story and do some investigating.

Just wondering what you want investigated? Do you not believe what Hardware.fr are reporting (they're actually an excellent tech site)? Or is Google translate leaving you with too many uncertainties?

Too many uncertainties :) Sadly my French is too awful to read the original directly. A bit more detail on precisely what went into this new addition to the standard would be nice.

They're not just google translating they actually have a (short) transcript of the actual SCR (Specification Change Request), which hardware.fr did not.
