hardware for Doom3?

I was just wondering what you all actually thought the requirements for Doom3 will be. I get the impression that the majority of people are assuming that they will be similar to the alpha, but if that is the case, either iD is stupid and trying to alienate 99% of the market, or the game isn't coming out for quite a few more years.

What kind of hardware requirements would you have expected if you had not seen the leak, which was most likely unoptimized, and quite possibly compiled for debug (which personal experience demonstrates is DRASTICALLY slower than release code - my brother wrote a simple OGL test app and when compiled for debug it was under 2 fps... compiled for release it ran @ over 60fps)

Remember when the first Quake came out in 1996? It was the same way! You really needed a top of the line system to play it or it was a slide show...

In December, 1996 a Pentium 200 cost over $500! Just for the friggin' CPU!!! Don't even get me started on the $200 4MB S3 Virge VX.

why would you get a virge vx, the software renderer was faster than the hardware one until the voodoo

Because that was the D3D part at the time. It was as big of a joke as Edge (NV1) but hey this is going on seven years ago which is about a billion light years in this biz...

Then there was the Matrox Mystique (we called it the mistake). Matrox Millennium and Millennium II were very good but a real 3D solution was needed. Problem is using a Voodoo card made the 2D screwy so I wound up connecting the Matrox HD15 via BNC (V1) and the Voodoo to HD15-HD15 (V2) on my Nanao monitor. All I had to do was switch sources when playing a game. Those were the days. Of course the Voodoo cards couldn't do Windowed 3D until V3...

wtf? I've written OpenGL apps in debug and release and didn't get no 30 times difference in framerate.

I ran the leaked beta on my box and it ran about 40 fps but it should be better on the final release.

id confirms Doom III for Xbox. They confirm it for a P3 733 with a Geforce3. I think it will run on consumer hardware.

I'm wondering what is going to require the better system to run. Hl2 or Doom3

Oh yea, and it takes a whooollle massive amount of fillrate to run at 740p. Compared to the average computer...which is at LEAST 1024x768, preferably with anti-aliasing. I garuntee you, even at high resolutions on PC, a good PC video card will be able to run with signifigantly more details/effects than the NV2A-powered XBox.

an Xbox is a p3 733, with a Geforce 4

Actually...speed-wise, its between GeForce 3 and 4, but with a few extra capabilities. It will perform better than a PC with that hardware though....as it is a highly integrated system with the unified memory architecture and whatnot, and it doens't have the overhead of an operating system.

XBox actually has a GPU that's somewhere between GF3 and GF4, not exactly the same as either.

I'd say it'll probably be pretty close to this:
Intel Pentium III 1GHz
128MB RAM (256MB recommended)
Geforce 3
2GB free hard drive space

People need to stop worrying about it so much. It'll run on your system... it'll just run better if you upgrade. This applies to any of the latest and greatest software out there.

Yes, but the point is it DOES run on the xbox. Assuming they don't disallow 640*480 and 800*600, it should be completely playable at those resolutions, with some settings turned down, on mid-end hardware. You can say the same thing about UT2k3 - it is probably very playable on a GF2Ultra with a ~1GHz processor, but not necessarily pretty. With everything turned up, of COURSE it will eat up even the fastest stuff out today.

I swear to God, some of you people here just talk out your a$$. The XBox running at 733MHz is NOT the same as a PC running at 733MHz. I thought this was common knowledge but I guess it's not. I'm not here to start an XBox (console) vs PC war, but when people start spewing crap, I just can't help but say something. The fact is Doom3 IS coming out for the XBox but with lesser detail. It still will look awesome on the XBox but the PC will look better. You are talkign about a $179 console compared to a VERY expensive PC if you are planning to run everything with max settings (1280x1024x32 min with 4XAA and 8XAF). I think the XBox will do just fine with Doom3, and I think it is a HELL of a deal. Not to mention Halo2 is coming out the beginning of 2004 for it. :D
