Hardware firewalls and proxy servers

I have a syslink router with a hardware firewall, and the new msn messenger wont hook up to the internet. I think i need to either open some ports to get it to work or set up a proxy server. Does anyone know what ports to open to get msn messenger to work OR how do i figure out the settings for a proxy server? I have no experience with proxy servers at all

if you have a fairly new linksys, you can set up port triggering. go the linksys support site and search for msn messanger. it will show you how to do this.
