Has anyone taken the free computer hardware and maintainence certification at expertrating.com? How does one prepare for it?

I would assume that you prepare for it by taking it. Since it's free, you should be able to take it as many times as you like . I never took the test.. Can you link directly to it? (click the word "http" right above the area where you type the message).

anyone know the legitimacy of this site, and if their ratings carry any weight in the US?

You could put it on a resume, but it won't hold much weight unless it's one of the major certs. Get a cert from Microsoft, Comptia, Cisco, Oracle, Red Hat, or Novell.
