Hardware accelerated "visualizations" for media players?

Im looking for hardware accelerated visualizations for windows media player or any other media player for that matter.

I like the visualizations in media player, but they have always run at low fps or looked low resolution in full screen mode.

Are there any plugins or standalone players that have hardware accelerated effects?

I remember milkdrop for winamp was great for this, unfortunately that plugin died long ago as far as i know.

MilkDrop still works just fine even though the latest version is now quite old.

Is this rabidhamster thing supposed to be better than milkdrop?

I just tried it, and the beat detection seemed way off, although the scenes did look quite nice and it ran excellent on my rig (85fps constant in fullscreen).

r4 has the best beat detection I've seen in a vis, but it can be a pain to set up. And yes it is better than milkdrop, at least from my perspective. it has numerous effects that can be added and subtracted in real time and can be remotely managed, eg. you can have it run on a pc hooked up to a projector and control it from any pc networked with it. you can also create custom scenes and even import video and run effects on it. it might not have all teh 'wow thats craaaaazy visuals' that milkdrop has, but it's still my favorite.

edit: the recording bit is because it's really meant to be run off a line in on a pc hooked up to a mixer, but you can set it to internal or something like that to have it run off of winamp. you can also manage the visuals via a pop up screen similar to milkdrop.

After playing with it a bit i do like R4 more than milkdrop, especially since you dont need winamp to use it.

I still havent got the beat detection even close to right though.
