Hardrive went MIA from Explorer...

One day I come back to my computer and turn the monitor back on and wave the mouse around so the screen saver deactivates and the windows desktop reappears... only it never did. I thought perhaps the monitor finally died (it's really old) but when I reset the computer images showed up again on screen and it booted fine. The only thing is, now I'm missing a hard drive, my D:, which had alot of important data on it. What steps should I take to diagnose what is wrong and attempt to recover my invaluable data? I'm on Windows 2k.

Slave it to another comp ( no need to bolt it in , just cable it & leave it outside the case ) & copy your stuff onto the other HD .

Now put it back in your comp ( change the jumper , back to where it was ) & fdisk , reboot & format . You lose everything .

If you have enough space , partition the drive into at least 2 , put the operating system on the 1st part ( C ) & your files on the the other partitions .
Now reinstall the operating system .

Slave it again to the other comp & copy your stuff back .
