Hardrive running at 145 Degrees!

I have three HDs in my system.

2x Sata running both at 145 degress F
1x IDE running at 127

I'm a little freaked out about the 145, i don't think that's normal at all.
Anyone know what I can do? I got a dell 4700

Whoa that's hot. My Seagate drive runs at about 32 without a fan. I guess the only thing you can really do is to get a fan in there to blow over the hard drives.

Those are all really hot. I don't like to see mine past 40C (104F).

Since it's a Dell, I'd just keep my important data on another computer. If the drives fail, it's their fault and it should be covered by the warranty, right?

For comparison, my 74GB Raptor is running at 38C right now in a Sonata II with pretty poor airflow. Due to the rubber grommets, it's not even in contact with the case's steel, so it can't transfer its heat to the case. It's at least 75F in the room as well.

In my roomy Chieftec case, the Raptor ran at 32-33C most of the time.

My friend's Samsung 120GB SATA drive runs at 23-25C in his Sonata. I don't know how I pulled that off (I built it)...maybe the sensor is wrong.

HOLY CRAP, that's ridiculously high.. my hdd's run @30c in a 80 degree fahrenheit room.

Yea 48C is a little on the hot side, but nothing to would Freak out about.

It's definitely a tad scary...my dad has a Dell, and I think it only has one fan, going over the HSF. You might need to do a bit of "maintainence" to install a new fan near the hard disks.

funny you mention that, i just opened up my case to see how many fans were in there and yep only one fan on top that's it!

Most HDs can handle up to 55C (my laptop HD runs at 56-58C during virus scans with other stress), but an intake fan in front of the HDs would certainly help temps.

It's probably a sensor error- open up your case, and feel it with the back of your hand (after its been spinning for a while).

If it was that high, you would feel the case get hot and the ambient room temperature rise by a noticable amount.

Another test would be to check your case temp, it would be very high if the HD's were running that hot.

I have a new Diamond max that also seems to run hot.

I have two drives in a three bay unit, one at the top and one at the bottom. Its one of those Antec performance cases. The fan seems mostly to blow accross the top of the lower drive. Would it be better to invert the lower drive so its upside down and the air flows accross the circuitry and pcb on the "bottom" of the drive.

I'm not sure if I'm making sense, but I guess my question is where is it more important to have the bulk of the airflow the metal case top, or the circuitry/pcb bottom of the drive?

Thanks!
