I received a hardrive from a friend today so i tried to hook it up, i got the connecters right , and everything but when i would connect the second drive that received from my friend my pc wouldnt boot so i took the second hardrive out of my pc and then my pc booted fine , then while i was in windows i plugged in the second hardrive, and my pc shut off, just like it would if the power went off, so i removed the second hardrive comepletly this time when i started windows it asked me i wanted to check the hardrive for errors so i did think it was a good idea so i let it check the errors, the thing im not sure about is if my pc shut off while it was checking for errors or after but it shut off and now it wont start windows....If i restart windows starts to boot and i see the "windows loading" but once its about to open the logon my pc gets a blue green and shuts off.........

Im on knoppix right now and my hardrive apprears to be working cause i can access my files but i cant see to load windows correctly ......I tried loading the windows recovery console but when i did i didnt see any options on how to recover.....I tried the the check for errors option and it said it didnt find any......thats all i could do cause i didnt know what else to do........

How do i fix my pc now ? is it possible to fix this without losing my files......can i check for errors with knoppix ?

thanks in advance

never, i repeat never plug in a hard drive while the computer is on and in windows........it sounds like to me you should recover what ever files you can thru knoppix and reformat the main drive....

Welcome to the forums

well there is 1 major red flag that I noticed
then while i was in windows i plugged in the second hardrive, and my pc shut off

You should never be running the pc while hooking up any internal devices.

1)I would get he diagnostic disk from the manufacture of your hard drive to see if it comes up any errors, (usually located on their website)

2) if that passes then i would boot off you windows xp cd(im assuming, you did not mention which version of windows) and go to the recovery console and run a chkdsk /p /r

3)If that does not fix it, you can try a repair installation of windows, or you will have to save you data and do a complete format.

and the last possiblility is you could have damaged some while plugging the 2nd hard drive live, possible your hard drive and/or motherboard

Should have checked the jumper on the drive first, your primary drive set to master, the other drive set to slave. Never never never plug in any hardware while the PC is on, you'll be really lucky if you didn't fry something...

Ok, thanks for the advice everyone....I was lucky cause the pc right now apprears to be fine...i had to format and reinstall windows and lost everything but its okay, didnt have anything important on..........checked the disk for errors and it looks fine...........

Now that i think of it it was pretty stupid of me, but i did it cause some dude on a forum said that windows detected new hardware when he installed the hardrive, so i thought it was like usb , plug and play lol.....

Im gonna be building my own computer soon and i thought i could do it on my own but after this incident ive asked a friend whos done it b4 to come over and help me.......thanks again
