Hardrive = loud = major problem?

I have a Maxtor 6.8g hd. It has started to make a loud noise at times resembling a small car with the pedal to the floor!
Last nite it booted up and then locked up, I restarted and it said there were errors and fixed itself. I run scandisk and it does not find anything.
Is this drive on the way out?

of course if it still has a warranty, you could go that route too... i know a few 15 and 18gigers i recently sold still had 1 or 2 years left on em. my 40GB Maxtor started doing that 3 weeks ago and i immediately RMA'd the sucker. they sent back a 46GB in its' place woohoo! that was with advanced RMA anyway... cheers!
