I have a old 40G IDE with a bunch of music on it, some of the folders/files on it are accessible when i hook it up but not the one that I'm trying to move to a new HD, I get the device error. It was working about 2 weeks ago, am I basically screwed or is there anyway to get that data off?

Its hard to say without actually looking at the machine in person, but here are some things i would try:

- reseeding the connections to the hard drive and to the IDE controller on the mobo.
- swapping the hard drive to the other IDE controller on the mobo.
- changing the position of the hard drive on the IDE cable.

I dont know if any of those things would work, but that is what I would try. Otherwise you might be out of luck :(

I have a newer board, so only 1 IDE controller, tried 2 different cables no luck, what about some form of data recovery software or anything like that?

Data recovery software works only if you have drive physically connected to PC and working fine...

How is your MASTER/SLAVE settings? Set both drives to CABLE SELECT if that don't work, set one to MASTER, other to SLAVE.

I assume your new HD is IDE also?
Does your computer work with only 40 gb drive connected?

few things you can try:

-move 40 to other computer and transfer via network or record on a bunch of DVDs (try both HDs in another PC?)
-external enclosure for 40 gb HDD
-IDE card
-IDE to SATA adapter

I'm sure somebody in FOR SALE/TRADE will love if you sell "this piece of junk" to them for cost of shipping.
