I had a great idea for this the other night. The same way they used to hang speakers off the sides of monitors, someone should come up with a couple half LCDs that make an affordable version of this.

lol. 2 half monitors or 1 whole monitor that splits in two?

while some lcd makers might like to use the excess bits of motherglass left over from the cutting process, that might be a little inefficient given that you still have to have all the processing and input hardware for 2 separate monitors.

might be easier to allow people to use one large landscape monitor with 2 older smaller monitors in portrait mode. that way people can re-use their old monitors. as long as the dotpitch is close and you have no scaling on the side monitors you could get something useful out of it. the main problem being that most older lcds would be TN and the portrait modes would really suck. even the newer samsung bezel-less monitors coming out are unlikely to solve this unless they are c-pva, otherwise all this will cost as much as 3 IPS dells 2410 on sale ($1500).

30 minute video review..epic:)
but yea pretty sweet.
should get useful since monitors are getting bigger and cheaper. as long as you got decent size its just like being in a cockpit/car, the gaps are fine. reusing tiny monitors would suck. and yea in the past this would never work with the smaller stuff we had. but now bigger screens are making things better, like in racing games where the in cockpit view is no longer way too small to be useful.

and yea no point in half lcds. cheap smaller monitors are basically costing nothing. in portrait mode those would work ok to flank a larger monitor. still thats only something you'd resort to only if you had them hanging around for reuse though. smalls small..

even using cheapo 19's would be great. I've been playing around with triple 20's for a while and have been loving it.

It looks like great technology to me. However, I'll wait until more games support it. I can deal with the split bezels, but I'd prefer games to keep the HUD on the middle screen, no matter what.

I wonder if it supports monitors of different sizes. To me, the ideal setup would be a 1920x1200 24" in the middle, and a 1600x1200 20.1" on each side. If that works, maybe it would even somewhat eliminate the fish eye effect?

Currently no. Hopefully that is something they will eventually support.

isn't 19" 100 bucks each now? that would be like 300 for triple. not too bad will get a better experience than a single 22.

One of the displays needs to have displayport, and I don't think they run for $100. But, it definitely does not cost as much as people seem to think (unless you want to go crazy with 3 30" panels).

I need the 3x DVI to not cost $100 extra... or it needs to work over the second 2 DVI's in a crossfire setup. This DisplayPort thing is not pleasing. What's the benefit to the consumer of DisplayPort?

That's the other thing ... no crossfire support?! We are drastically increasing the number of pixels, this is where crossfire would thrive.

Totally hypothetical never going to happen.

I have a 26" 1920x1200 16:10 LCD monitor.

I measured it at 13.5" (13.7" by math) high.

A 17" 4:3 monitor is about 13.6" wide.

The 17" width 1280 resolution is 6% more than the 26" height 1200. 3% on each side.

If the driver could fudge the 80 extra pixels off, this would end up giving you a 1024+1920+1024 = 3968 x 1200 10:3 monitor.

HP Model 1740 17 LCD Tilt DVI monitor $75 referb

Was I the only one that stopped paying attention to Kyle and watched Alyx watching kyle while he spoke when he had the main screen from HL2 on?

I toyed around with 3 24 monitors for a while using software and a second card and ended up ditching. I now use a good but inexpensive front projo with a HTPC and a 4890 and the 120 in screen with no bezels blows away the 3 24s anyday. I may get a new toy soon so I may retry the 3x24 setup upstairs in my office and reevaluate with a new ati card. As of right now sitting on the couch with a g25 playing shift on a 120 inch screen is about as good as gaming gets....

edit:

this is the only 5770 on new egg that I could search for, if this does eyefinity for 250 then I am buying!!!

I wanna know if the cards with 6 monitor capabilities will support more than 2 dvi outputs.

all my monitors are older and don't have hdmi or display port. As far as I know, the 3 display cards only allow for 2 dvi outputs

edit.... immediately after posting i searched and found display port to dvi cables and adapters. so i don't think even a 3 display card is out of question for me

felt dirty watching. can't stand kyle. there's a fine line between an investigative reporter and an opinionated jerk.
