HardOCP predicting new Nvidia cards in late Feb 2010

Not sure if Kyle's contacts are better or worse than anyone else's but he was willing to go on record in his 5850 review 5850 review about the future of nvidia cards.

We think the ATI Radeon HD 5850 is "THE" next-gen video card that gamers and hardware enthusiasts are going to flock to.

~

On the flip side of this, many hardware enthusiasts are asking, where is NVIDIA? The fact is that NVIDIA has no products to immediately answer AMD?s 5800 series and it is our understanding that it will be late February at the earliest before we actually see a next-gen GPU show up from NVIDIA in the retail channel

Obvious bit ouch if true. I wonder if nvidia is having that hard of a time. If so, one wonders if they'll dumb down the card for a faster launch or keep plugging away until Feb 2010 and get into a price war until then. By Feb 2010, AMD might even have enough time for a refresh to keep the pressure on them.

If we don't hear anything SOLID from nvidia by the time Windows 7 is officially launched, I'd have to say, Kyle is doing his homework.

Pretty reputable source there.

I effin HATE their reviews though. Comparing one card on ultra settings while the other on medium.

Makes no sense!!

Anyone sane already realized this when news about the badly finished first round came in around August - another spin + finalization, card mfr'ing, shipping out etc would take at least 12-16 weeks IMO so it's January at the earliest for mass availability.

Of course, there's a very little chance these negative news were all deliberate fakes and it's right around the corner... but I doubt it.

Agreed. If true, a 3-4 month lead is pretty significant. I'm guessing that ATI will be rolling out the 5870 X2 in Oct-Nov, which would give ATI not only the fastest single gpu but also the fastest multi-gpu card with no answer from NVIDIA. GT300 better be a winner.

Not to get off topic, but |H|'s reviews make perfect sense. Most sites normalize the settings and give you the fps. |H| just attempts to normalize the fps, and give you the settings. What |H| does is really closer to what you do as a gamer when you get a new game - you find the best playable settings.

|H| doesn't only give you a good idea of what you can expect from a given card, they also provide suggested settings as a by-product of their methodology. If they bench a card you own, try their settings sometime... They're generally pretty good. Plus, they also include apples-to-apples benchmarks as well.

Might be great for AMD but not that good for us the consumers...

On the other hand the 5850 has more performance than the GTX285 for cheaper.

Additionally nVidia doesn't like being second and if can't win due to hardware they will try to win some other way, which isn't good for us the consumers either.

I disagree. When there are two competing companies, the best possible thing for consumers is for them to have 50/50 market share.

His prediction was already posted in a thread. Others seem to think earlier though, and the specs seem insane.

There arent many people predicting that nV wont hold the hardware crown, but we will see.

Edit: Prediction was posted on XS, not here. Too much forum reading.

I think the same - but atm, except in the minds of some die hard fans, AMD has nVdia well cornered in all price points.

So, while the prices of the 58xx are reasonable price, they could be lower :)

IMO GF100

1. will "preview" at thanksgiving (official leaks) in late nov

2. softlaunch / eng samples / review sites in mid-dec before x-mas (similar to 2pcb gtx295 dec. 08)

3. and be running full steam with wide availablity (like hd5870 is as of 9/28/09) at Christmas/January

4. and perform between a 5870 & 5870x2 in terms of speed. (i think the gap might actually widen compared to gt200->hd4870.)

Well I think Kyle is being overly optiamistic here. I doubt 385 be ready in Feb . Unless NV uses old 200 tech . Which could happen . Anyway this thread needs to stay on front page . Actually this thread should be stickyed . So that When and If the NV 385 comes out the Trueth behind NV marketing is fully revealed. Sticky this thread.

Its time to stop the NV marketing in forums once and for all.

You are the worst troll on these forums.

There is information everywhere on G300, aka Fermi. You can choose not to read it and pretend it will be "old 200 tech," but that doesnt make it true.

This actually makes sense. I imagine NV will do everything they can to keep 5870's off of Xmas lists, even if they don't have a card to offer in its place. They just have to plant the seed of FUD in the minds of consumers, and they should be a able to keep a large number of buyers from making the ATI plunge.

I hear this so many times and yet from all the gaming cards I've owned (5 ATI, 4 nVidia) I've had more problems with nV cards (mostly with the GTS 640 I got on launch day). I've never tried XFire though so maybe that has something to do with it.

ugh, thank you! i thought i was the only one who actually looked at their data. they are the only site that shows you the FPS as a function of t, so you can see exactly when/where the minima and maxima occur and you can see exactly how the different cards cope at the crunch points. who cares what the average FPS is if it's over 50? it's a benchmark, not a race. show me the fucking minima.

Thanks for the clarification on the name. I actually meat to put a "?" next to it, as I was confused about that for a bit. I've known about the "Fermi" name, but had never heard anything about GF100. I wonder what the rationale for the change is.

So I'm not so sure things are as bad as some people make it out to be.

This is interesting news as well. I just shipped my GTX 280 to its new owner, so I'll be picking up something to replace it in the nearish future. If NV can show me enough reasons to not pick up a 5870, I might just wait.

I'm really not looking to spend more than $500 though, even for a beast of a card. Most of the games I'm looking forward to this Xmas season are either Xbox 360 exclusives or will be available on 360 and PC, so I can be patient. I haven't even turned on my gaming rig in a while except to install the driver for my 7900GS and print a shipping label (stupid Canon doesn't support network printing for Mac OS and my printer).
