    TechSpot (GPU/CPU): http://www.techspot.com/review/615-far-cry-3-performance/
    HardOCP (GPU): http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/12/05/far_cry_3_video_card_performance_preview

Both use the latest beta release drivers. The HardOCP review is really just a preview using two cards (680 and 7970GHz). The TechSpot review is a complete article.

Overall, these numbers are quite different from what we saw in leaked benchmarks. Nvidia and AMD are very close. Interestingly, however, the two reviews do not agree on which is fastest at ultra quality.

Update - 12/14/12: New benchmarks out from Tom's Hardware: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/far-cry-3-performance-benchmark,3379.html

Update - 12/17/12: HardOCP has just published its complete performance review of FC3: http://hardocp.com/article/2012/12/17/far_cry_3_video_card_performance_iq_review

the techspot article uses SSAO while hardocp uses HDAO. HDAO produces the best image quality in Farcry 3.

HDAO is a direct compute accelerated technique in Farcry 3.

    http://far-cry.ubi.com/fc-portal/en-gb/community/detail_news.aspx?c=tcm:21-73246&ct=tcm:6-231-32

    "
DIRECTCOMPUTE ACCELERATED HIGH DEFINITION AMBIENT OCCLUSION

Far Cry 3 implements a new and improved version of HDAO that uses full 3D camera space position data to detect valleys in the scene that should be shaded darker, and attenuates the lighting based on valley angle. In Far Cry 3 this technique has been significantly improved in both performance and quality relative to previous implementations."

PCGH also uses HDAO and the HD 7970 Ghz is close to 20% faster than GTX 680.

    http://www.pcgameshardware.de/Far-C...y-3-Test-Grafikkarten-CPU-Benchmarks-1036726/

hardocp saw lower fps during cutscenes on HD 7970 Ghz (first 200 sec) . But once actual gameplay started the HD 7970 Ghz can be seen to be clearly faster.

HD 7970 Ghz CF is faster at 1080p than GTX 680 SLI and also as smooth as GTX 680 SLI. At 1440p HD 7970 CF has some stuttering issues.

AMD has its driver work cut out for the next version.

I agree that HDAO looks the best. However, it comes at a cost (around -10 or 12 fps on Nvidia GPU's compared to HBAO performance). Interestingly, HBAO apparently performs worse than HDAO on AMD gpus...

The games performance is pretty inconsistent. From what i've read online. My 670 plays it just fine, but some with 670's are getting 1/2 the performance. Hopefully it all gets ironed out sooner rather than later.

HDAO was invented by AMD. HBAO was invented by Nvidia. so it looks like each GPU vendor's cards run better on their respective algorithms.

I agree. Nice to see that our 8320's will be performing very close to Intel. Hopefully this trend keeps going so I don't envy those cpus so much.

I'm also happy to see that the drivers keep coming. I was a little worried at first but these results are much improved and more around what I want.

Looks like AMD has some low hanging fruit for their next driver in the "20 FPS while doing a cut-scene bug"

Looks like more of the same per the [h] article. If you're single gpu, use amd, if you're multi gpu, use nvidia.

no for 1080p they clearly say HD 7970 GHZ CF is as smooth as GTX 680 SLI and faster. for 1600p the GTX 680 SLI is smoother even though fps is higher on HD 7970 Ghz CF.

    http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/12/05/far_cry_3_video_card_performance_preview/4

"We were pleased to find both SLI and CrossFire working well on day 1. The scaling is good, and the benefit in framerate is real. We found that SLI and CrossFire allowed MSAA at 2560x1600 with playable performance. However, we did experience stuttering on 7970 GHz Edition CrossFire at 2560x1600 with 4X MSAA, and we did not experience this with SLI. We also found that at 1080p with 8X MSAA the stuttering went away on 7970 GHz Edition CrossFire, and had the same smoothness as SLI at that setting. We will be looking into this more."

Really wish there was a demo for this!

They should be required for all PC games given the fact that we can never be sure how it will run on our systems.

2500k and a 560ti 448 at 1900x1200.... looks like between 39-43 fps... but who knows what that actually feels like in this particular game!

Takeaway for me is I can still get away with my old X4 980 @ 4.0 Ghz paired with a GTX 670 at 1920x1200. Guess I can keep circling the airport as far as a CPU/mobo upgrade goes for another year.

    looking at TechSpot review

7870 performs similarly to 7950 and has a huge lead over 7850

I was observing the hardocp screen comparisons, having a hard time discerning image quality between the different ssao options to justifiy the performance hit going with HDAO over HBAO or simply SSAO. Then I read hardocp's commentary, and I found that I wasn't alone as they did not recommend going with HDAO on either setup. Overall it seems like the game trade blows between different settings and setups, with the edge going to the 7970GE when resolutions are ultra high and settings are maxed / near maxed. Game is very demanding.

I agree - the different SSAO options are almost impossible to tell apart, and given the performance hit, maxing them doesn't make much sense. I'd much rather have 2xAA plus alpha to coverage than HDAO. I'm glad HardOCP mentioned this in the commentary, but I think it's a shame they did all their "playability" testing with HDAO/HBAO, instead of SSAO - I would have liked to see the other options pushed up a bit.

I have the game but haven't installed it yet...trying to decide between playing mouse/keyboard on my gaming rig vs. gamepad on my HTPC.

In my opinion, HBAO makes the game look like someone spilled copy toner all over the screen (look at that ugly scaffolding). SSAO and HDAO seem to each do better jobs in different scenes, and it's probably a matter of personal taste which is better visually.

I ran this game with HDAO and noticed little if any image quality improvements. I did however notice my framerate was crap.

I run this game @ 1080 with 4XMSAA, SSAO, 1 GPU frame rendering, VSYNC On and all other settings on Ultra. I get 60FPS most of the time, except when I am at the DR's house and look over at the ocean from above - My frame-rate goes down to 15-20FPS. I assume this is an CPU bottleneck issue? My GPU usage at that moment is only 65%

    Any ideas?

Yup, almost as good as the i3-2100. Seriously though, with .6 fps difference between a ~3ghz i3 and a 4.5ghz hexa-core this game is not very CPU dependent.

It looks like both SSAO and HBAO have something like a "shadow aura" on objects which HDAO doesn't have

I don't like the way the HBAO technique renders the shadows,it's like they are just black painted areas rather than a gradual or more authentic "semi shadow" that HDAO renders.
The grass comparison is a perfect example.

    2.5ghz i7 matches 4ghz Vishera performance. Sad.
