I say Mathematics, or one of the biological sciences like BioChem, Genetics, Pharmacology, ect.

anything that you dont have control of...such as biological studies, where you can do the same experiment numerous times but due to things out of your control they dont work

I'm doing a phd in math :thumbsup:

I bet different ones would be hardest for different people, it depends on what you are good at.

one of my friends is currently en-route to his PhD in Quantum Physics. I look at his text books and get a headache before I even open the cover ;)

Chemistry is the hardest. It's a lot of tough, high level academic work. And you also have to be the professor's lab assistant, spending endless hours toiling away in the labs.

They are all hard (from reputable schools at least). By this stage, one is entering an area they are already pretty darned good at so the definition of difficulty isn't easy summarize. Different programs stress different things.
