I'm thinking along the lines of Battery or Blackened....after the soft stuff of course, when the guitars come wailing in. Also Pantera's Fvcking Hostile comes out pretty hard.

Metallica is great at intro riffs. The song Fuel comes to mind.

Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption" was something that I was able to play properly after about two and a half years practice. Specifically Van Halen style tapping. Not Metal though.

Metallica has many great into riffs. Ranging from Kill 'Em All to Reload.

damn i wish i kept the mp3 of me playing the intro to Master of Puppets... I thought it was pretty good for a hobbyist who fiddles with a guitar once a week or so...

I can make another one in a few... EDIT>>> after I get off this conf. call... I've been on it for 3hr48mins... ++

I was wondering this too.

Although, I'd have to say the Master of Puppets intro wins on both counts. Its fairly straightforward, but its at a beat of 200+ and ALL DOWNSTROKES. Most people can't even move their hand up and down that fast, let alone pick at that speed effectively. Even with several years experience, I still have to cheat and alternate pick to get it right.

And it definitely has an incredible sound to it as well. If you're into music theory and you pick it apart, you can see where they change scales and uses unique resolutions to put real depth into it, instead of wailing away power chords like everyone does today. Its really an amazing piece of work.

While I certainly agree with the Metallica sentiments and would probably toss some other likely candidates in (AC/DC?), I think the opening to "Layla" is probably one of the best ever, for a sheer combination of memorability, how loud and strong it is (or length x girth), and general kickassness.

I gotta agree with you there....it is up there in terms of difficulty.

too bad the lyrics are straight out of a retarded 12 year old's diary and the verse riff is terrible. the middle of the song is great, though. everything from the quiet breakdown right up to the start of the fast solo is good stuff. then hammet comes back in with his soul-less wanking and spoils the fun.

when i used to take guitar lessons, the teacher would put together "bands" of his students for recitals. one year my group did master of puppets and no one had any trouble with it. with the exception of the speed-picking, it's really not that hard.

Everyone raves about MOP, but I think that Disposable Heroes has a better opening riff.

I'm also a fan of "Drag the Waters" by Pantera with "I'm Broken" being up there too.

Exactly why do you think the lyrics are bad? It´s about drug abuse..

Yeah. I admit I'm not a musician, and I was a big fan of Metallica during their earlier work, but I don't understand the admiration that the younger generation seems to give them. Their work is really not that remarkable from a purely musical standpoint. As one of their big fans in the 80s and early 90s, I can tell you that we didn't think they were great amazing musicians back then, we just thought it was really good thrash metal.

There are many, many great bands and artists out there whose musical talents and accomplishments are far superior.

True, but the lyric poem itself is childish and uncreative. And the meter (or verse riff) is terrible and overly strict. Have you never noticed that almost every line is either 5 or 10 syllables long? In classic Metallica fashion, they came up with the guitar intro first and then built the whole song around that with a flat tune and a military beat, and Hetfield is a crappy poet/lyricist (if you'll pardon me).

End of passion play, crumbling away
I'm your source of self-destruction
Veins that pump with fear, sucking darkest clear
Leading on your death's construction

[Chorus:]
Taste me you will see
more is all you need
you're dedicated to
how I'm killing you

Come crawling faster
obey your Master
your life burns faster
obey your Master
Master

Master of Puppets I'm pulling your strings
twisting your mind and smashing your dreams
Blinded by me, you can't see a thing
Just call my name, `cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
Just call my name, `cause I'll hear you scream
Master
Master
[End Chorus]

Needlework the way, never you betray
life of death becoming clearer
Pain monopoly, ritual misery
chop your breakfast on a mirror

[Chorus]

Master, Master, Where's the dreams that I've been after?
Master, Master, You promised only lies
Laughter, Laughter, All I hear and see is laughter
Laughter, Laughter, laughing at my cries

Hell is worth all that, natural habitat
just a rhyme without a reason
Neverending maze, drift on numbered days
now your life is out of season

I tend to agree with Mr. Brain, the lyrics do sound like they are out of a retarded 12-year olds diary albiet maybe a speedball addicted retarded 12 year old.

Oh yeah, sorry I didn't answer the OP's question.

Not really an "into riff", but IMO the best metal intro is Megadeth's "Peace Sells... but Who's Buying?"

If there's a new way,
I'll be the first in line,
But it better work this time...

:)

umm.. maybe that´s your opinion, I agree that the lyrics in their three first albums are so so (especially Kill em all), but most of the lyrics on AJFA, the black album and Load/Reload are good IMO.
