harddrives: the good brands?

Where did you hear WD was bad? I've never had a problem since I've started using them. I've had nothing but problems with the Maxtors I've owned though. Seagate, WD, Hitachi, Samsung, they're all good.

Oh god, here it goes again.

Each person will claim that they have had one manufaturer fail on them more than others, so therefore they believe that it is not a reliable HD manufacturer. This happens ALL THE TIME.

Ill say this...

Where did you hear Maxtor was bad? Ive never had a problem since I've started using them. I've had nothing but problems with the Western Digitals I've had though. Seagate, Maxtor, Samsung, they're all good.

That was easy, wasn't it.

I don't necessarily think they are bad. I've gone through numerous WD hard drives without having failure once. I usually get WD because of their cheap PATA drives after rebate. But from what I hear, Seagate would be the best. If you want SATA, get a WD Raptor!

Excelsior is right, but I can say this.
In my experience, Maxtor hard drives fail more than they work... literally. they are utter junk and I will never buy one ever again.

YMMV!

but I do prefer Seagate because they never go bad on me... (talking corporate environment too)
and I have no bad opinion on WD.. I don't use them much, but the ones I have work fine. (I still have an 800JB at home that works great)

Agreed with Excelsior...

It's just like cars, or snowmobiles, or 4 wheelers, or whatever. Everyone has a preference, and you'll never get a solid agreement. I can tell you from a retailer perspective, where we sell maxtors, WD's, Hitachis and Seagates, we don't see any one of them as a "worse" brand than the next.

I've NEVER had a hard drive fail on me yet 😉 Guess I'm just lucky... I'm running 3 pretty new WD's right now, and they're fine. Have a 20GB Hitachi in my old computer that's been around for like 4 years already.

Ive had 10 or so Maxtors, one finally failed when I checked it this year (730 meg, that should tell you something) and a 40 gig that is several years old has developed a whining bearing (very anoying) so it finally went into a firewire external enclosure. Other than noise its fine. The rest were simply retired for experimental/emergency purposes while they still worked. They run 24/7. So my experience is pretty good.

I've had 4 Maxtor's, 2 Seagates, 3 WD, and a Quantum. I've never had a problem with any of them (knock, knock). My Maxtor's have been the quietest overall, and my first WD sounded like a jet taking off, but 8 years later, it's still alive and ticking. You can get a lemon with any brand, and the real test will be how the Mfr. handles it from that point on. I've heard Seagate is great in that regard, but I can't speak from first hand experience.

I'd say determine the specs you're looking for and how much you're willing to spend. Then find a drive that fits the profile. I wouldn't artificially limit your choices.

I've had a Maxtor 60GB die after 4 years...and I abused it a lot 😛. Now I have another Maxtor 160GB and been running awesome for 4 months, and silent, I can't hear it. I also have a WD 80GB running for 3 months in my other comp. I have many friends who buy Maxtors and none have failed on them.....

I guess its all about luck? Or how much you abuse it

I like WD because that two I have are running strong and I've never had a problem with them. The fact that they also pay out their rebates is another reason why I like them. I also have one Seagate drive that came with my computer and it too has run flawlessly. On the other hand, I have heard horror stories about Seagate rebates so my favorite manufacturer at the moment is WD. As far as Maxtor is concerned, I personally know two people who have had Maxtors die on them. That plus all the horror stories I hear online make me weary of the company and I would never buy one of their harddrives unless I pay about $.10/gig.... and even in that case, I would never put anything of any value on them...
