Harddrives - Is this normal?

Every harddrive that I have had since my 10gb 7200rpm that I bought about 5 years ago, which still works fine and runs almost silently, has either gone bad or started to make a slight "whining" noise (I have no better way to describe it, but it sounds like the bearings aren't perfect so when simply spinning, the harddrive can be heard...well, spinning). Every harddrive I have bought in the past 5 years have started doing this. I have had 2 IBM 7200rpm 45gb drives, both started making this noise after 4-6months and eventually went completely bad. I have had a WD 7200rpm 40gb drive that began making this noise after 1month and started to get bad sectors. I have also had 2 Maxtor 7200rpm 60gb drives, one which was screeching out of the box and went straight back, and the next which started whining and eventually had bad sectors. Now I have another of the same Maxtor drives after an RMA, and this drive started silent, but after about 4 months it started making the noise while spinning too. My girlfriend built a computer this summer and has a WD 80gb 8mb drive, which started out spinning silently and now is noisy after about 5months.

My question is, do many of you out there experience this sound, it doesn't sound like the harddrive is going to die, however it is annoying while not being that loud it can easily be heard due to it's pitch. Also, are harddrives being made that much cheaper now than they were in the past or am I just unlucky? There is a computer setup at my work that monitors Andover, it has a Maxtor in it made in the mid 90's, it has run 24/7/365 for the past 4 years, and was used in a different computer for a few years before that and still hasn't had a problem.

Thank you

well, it seems to me like it happens to me with every drive too... and every other electronic device... but very rarely do they die on me. The last time I had a harddrive die on me it made an extreeeemmly squeally sound... worse than just the normal electronic frequency noise, and I could hear it from every direction, not just a certain angle which seems to happen a lot now.

Do harddrive companies sell better quality drives to computer makers? I know people have dells, compaqs, etc. and I am yet to hear a prebuilt computer whose harddrive makes this noise.
