Harddrives.. idea:Socketed cache

Would it be possible to fit a harddrive with socketed cache so that the you could upgrade a WD800BB to a WD800JB and the like? I think that would be an awesome idea!
God knows that when people are pulling over 900K/s offa me in Kazaa, I feel like my poor Baracuda 4 is about to give up on me. Man, that thing is built. 😛
 
i assume you meant 900KBytes/sec, just a bit under 1MB/s, which could be accomplished by the 500MB hard drive in the 486 here next to me..

that cuda IV of yours probably does 30MB/s or better sustained - 900KB/s isnt hard for it.
 
I imagine that it's possible... The could probably fit a socket like the ones that used to be found on upgradeable graphics cards.

Just out of interest, does anyone know the specs of the cache on the WD drives (as in clock speed etc..?)
 
I think the problem may be seek rather than sustained transfer, since those people are likely to get different files from him.

SCSI...? LOL
Or, make a big RAM-Disk and have the stuff that you share on there. 😉
 
Today I was sharing 2 gigs. There is no way in *bleep* that I could put that in a ramisk. I mean, I don't have the financial resources to do so.

What I was meaning, was wouldn't it be awesome to have socketed cache so that you could get an 80BB or whatever then a few months down the road add in some more cache to liven up the performance?
 
Awesome, yes...will they do it no? 🙂

Why would people buy a new hard drive if they can just make the one they have now faster?
