Harddrive Wiping Software

Sorry if it's a stupid question, I just realized I've never had to do this before.

Is there software for wiping your harddrive so that it's not recoverable? I'm selling my computer, and wanted to wipe all the data for obvious reasons. What's the best and easiest way to do it for free?
