Harddrive switch-a-roo - Question

Ok, i'm replacing one of my HD's in a bit. Replacing my D: (backup) drive with a higher capacity drive.

I'd like to copy data from my backup drive to my new one before i discard the old one, and since both my IDE channels are full, im planning to use one of my RAID channels in regular ATA mode to transfer the data... Once that's done, ill take out the old drive for good, and slide the new drive into the D: designation..


Will i have any probs doing this? Or should it go as smoothly as it sounds?


Added Question: Should i set my drive to Master when it's on the RAID channel?

Theoretically speaking, there should be no problems. If you are going to hook up the new drive to the RAID channel that would make more sense, of course. Then swap it to the other connector. Of course, if your RAID setup is usable as standard IDE I would (and do) connect my hard drives to the RAID controllers and my optical drives to the standard IDE controllers. Unless you mean an add in RAID/IDE Controller card. That way you don't have to have full IDE channels.

Added Answer: Master or slave makes no difference, as long as you are cabled the way you are jumpered.

You may want to use xcopy built into all NT based windows don't know it win9x have it. It runs in the command prompt and gets all the files. I don't know if its faster then using windows explorer.
Norton ghost is pretty good and it tells you how fast it coping.
I suggest when you copy is to make both drives Masters on seperate chains. It should copy faster I think.

My RAID controllers can do standard IDE. Right now the drive i want to swap out is on the Primary channel as a Slave (D.

So basically this is what i want to do:

data from current drive (Primary/Slave) ---> New Drive (RAID controller in IDE mode)

then move the New Drive into the place of the old one. The step above is purely for transfer of files, since i have about 30gb that needs to be moved.
