my hd (ibm) is acting up. sometimes hd isn't recognized on boot, but then everything can work for a couple of days. sometimes eveything freezes and i belive this is hd related too.

at the moment i'm using prime95 to test mys system but i realize there must be something better to test my harddrive. so i need a real torture test...

btw i've used a hd test bootdisk and done the full test without any problems.

Try SiSoft Sandra's "Hardware Burn-In" test, which you can set to loop around as it performs the test.
A few hours of this should give you a good idea.

Failing that, try the Ultimate Boot CD and run the Hitachi Data Lifeguard Tools on the CD, which will perform a Quick Test and an Extended Test. This will give you some idea if the disk is okay or not.

Lastly, check your power supply- what make/model? What wattage? Was it cheap, and does it weigh as much as a gnat's fart? If so, it may be suspect. Also, check your IDE cable - replace it if you can to see if that helps.
