Hey all, I've been faced with a problem for sometime. My parents machines has been having hard drive problems for a little over a year now, lemme go through the situation in detail.
First last july, over a year ago, the modem in the machine went. It was a creative 28.8k modem blaster that was a few years old. I didn't think anything of it and desperately needed to move onto the "lightening" fast 56k's anyway. Soon after the modem was replaced, Lucent tech Win modem, the hard drive gave out. That too was old, a Samsung 2.1 gig. It lead me to believe there were greater problems at hand. I was thinking electrical surges might be an issue and ran out to buy a new surge protector. I replaced the hard drive with a Seagate 4.3 gig, nothing fancy. The machine worked well for awhile and then a virus hit it and cripled the drive again. I corrected the virus and then low leveled the drive and reinstalled everything. The machine work perfectly again upto the summer. It started to have drive problems again where is would run scandisk on everyboot up, claiming it was not properly shut down when i can assure u it was. Finally the machine just stopped working, we're talking 25 minutes sitting at the windows spl ash screen before it BSOD'd. So today i decide to redo it all again. Unfortunately my 98SE is rendered useless because i don't have my product key code with me. However, I do have NT 4, a much more practical solution. I began the installation around 10 am, it's not 3:30 and it's STILL copying to the hard drive after only making the 3 start disks. Something's not right. I can't understand what could keep destroying the hard drive. I can't see how the virus would lay idle for 7 months and then just come back. It's got to be something else. The virus, when it did exist, simply wouldn't allow you to run any programs, but it was OS responsive. I could get around it in DOS and therefore know it posed no serious long term effects. Anyway, here are the system specs, please help, i'm at a loss.

Cyrix PR200
Intel mobo (don't remember model)
32 megs EDO ram
Seagate 4.3 5400 rpm drive
Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 Pro
Lucent Tech Winmodem
Sound Blaster 16

I don't think it's a heat issue, though the major problems do seem to occur in the summer. The machine is obviously not overclocked and the core runs at a mere 84 degrees.

I can accept that I guess. It's just so bad to test those parts here. After I finished the msdos part of the NT install, must have run for 12 or more hours!!!, i rebooted to continue and while posting the hard drive was reading like crazy and literally took 30 secs to a minute to complete the post but never stopped swapping from the drive. It's almost too much trouble to go through seeing as how it's a POS machine. It's just never easy telling people they need to buy more stuff to make things work :(, especially when it's family. Maybe i'll just donate my athlon classic here since i'm getting a duron 650/950 any day. Thanks for your input, anything else would be appreciated.
