harddrive issue and XP

Ok have a quick question. I've recently purchased a new 160GB hard drive. It's a Maxtor DiamondMax 16 Ultra ATA133 drive. Now my motherboard is an epox 8RDNA+ which does support ATA133 drives.

I'm currently running WindowsXP SP1 and also installed the Maxtor Big Drive Enabler and I've got it partitioned as 20GB for OS, and the rest for data (games/programs etc.).

Well my issue is.. after a nice clean boot the drive works flawlessly. Quick response times of programs and browsing of the drive. But I'll say leave my machine on go to work come back and then I get slow response times from programs etc. I can try to open notepad and it takes a good 2mins. sometimes. I'll get lockups when going into My Computer, browse to a directory on the drive and it will take a bit to display the information. I've run scandisk on the drive it reports just fine, defrag as well.

Any ideas as to what is causing this problem, is it the OS (no jabs from Linux advocates please) or the hardware. I'm not sure. it's frustrating. I don't want to reinstall XP but if I have to so be it.

Well I hope to hear from some helpful souls

Thanks..

Jason

first:

you don't need maxtor bigdrive support or w/e with xp + sp1,

don't know..

sounds like xp issue, i'll try to figure it out.. doesn't sound like HD though... maybe XP config issue, could be virus, memory, conflicts, etc...

1. Do you have the latest BIOS on your board?
2. Did you run the Maxtor Utility before or after you installed Windows?

it could be the big drive enabler... might want to try to remove it.. XP dont need it. Best thing i noticed about partitions is that any thing @60gigs or under work great, so you might want to try to repart that way if it isnt already.

Your OS part is a little big for me. this is the way my drive is parted:

6 GB OS
2 GB programs
20 GB games
rest for data (files/vids/music/etc)

I get nice boot times of 10-15 sec. but dont know if that has anything to do with a way overclocked FSB or not.

seems like you might have a virus or spyware killing your resources.

Not sure if this could be a Harddrive prob or a memory/motherboard prob... do you have any other harddrives that you could use as a test.

try a bit of hardware trouble shooting, remove all hardware but basics (harddrive/vidcard/memory/processor). After doing that and its still having problems, you have just narrowed the problem down to 5 items ( harddrive/vid/mem/proc/OS). If you dont have extra parts of these, try barrowing from a friend. Last resort, i dont suggest this often, buy some of the new hardware to test with, then return when ur done(do this as a last resort cause it aint too cool).

Good luck

I'll have to try your partition scheme. I thought about it. but wasn't sure if I needed it that way. But it might help, my boot times are just fine, around yours.. it's just frustrating.

Thanks..
