harddrive going crazy

Hi all,
i'm having major harddrive problems. It started the other day when I decided to reformat it. I booted up with a win98 boot disk and did the ol' format c:.
Something went terribly wrong and the disk wouldn't install any operating system. I tried reformatting again and I get this message:

Checking existing disk format.
Invalid device parameters from device driver.

Also, it changed the label from a word to an f with some crazy characters that can't be typed on a keyboard.
I tried plugging it into another computer (this one) to see what I could do with it in windows. Every time I try to do -anything- with it, windows goes crazy and shows me numerous blue screens before completely freezing up. This happens so easily that all it takes is a click on the d: in my computer. I of course cannot run scandisk because it freezes.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

ps: harddrive specs: western digital caviar 30gb ata100 7200rpm
computer specs: 1.4ghz athy t-bird, gigabyte 7dx mobo, 256mb crucial 2100, visiontek GF3, SBlive!

Since you have already tried formatting to no avial. Try FDISK then format. If you still have the same problem download Western Digitals diagnostic software and write zeros to the drive. I had to do this to get rid of a program that wrote to the boot sector and would not let anything else install. Also when you run WD's software it will give you an error code. If it is anything but 0000 then you have a bad drive.

HeSaidWhat,
Thanks so much for your advice. I didn't know WD made such a program. It worked beautifully! I'm installing win2K right now.

Thanks again,
