harddrive going bad that has Drivespace from win98

this 2gig harddrive with drivespace 3 that came with windows98 is starting to develop bad sectors all over it. i did a reinstall of win98 on a new harddrive. then i put on the 2gig harddrive that is compressed with Drivespace to try to recover some data. all i see some files on the harddrive but i noticed a huge file named "drivespace.000" in the 1.4gig range. now i have not run a scandisk yet because i think that if scandisk marks a bad sector on the harddrive that, lets say, is in the middle of this huge file any means of uncompressing this file will run into a CRC error. My question is this: is there a third party utility that can uncompress this drivespace.000 file without the help of using the windows 98 application called drivespace to uncompress it?

hmm, why would you want a 3rd party solution when you can usethe windows tool?

On Windows 9x
Programs -> Accesories -> System Tools -> Drivespace

Choose the drive with the dblspace.000 file on it, go to Advanced on the Menu and choose "Mount". That should give you access to the compressed drive that you have your data on.

in other words i need a more advance tool. the windows drivespace is saying that it cannot mount the drivespace.000 file. i need something to extract the data out no matter what the condition of the file. i just want to salvage as much as i can.

Haven't heard the word Drivespace said for a while. First, try running Scandisk on the file itself, type "Scandisk (Drive Letter):\drvspace.000" that will not repair bad sectors on the drive itself but check the file itself, then once it's confirmed errorless, then try running Scandisk on the actual drive and truthfully, if it's in such a bad condition that DriveSpace can't even Mount it then I doubt that any bad sectors will harm it much more. After both have been completely repaired, then try mounting again. That's 'bout all I think u can do.
