Harddrive enclosure can't read data correctly

I bought a vantec NexStar nst-350u2 external enclosure
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=370852

I installed my 200gb seagate in it, transferred some data, tried to unrar a 300mb file and got a crc checksum error

so naturally I am very pissed off, because I had just RMAed a SYBA enclosure that did the same thing

but I did some tests by swapping my 200gb seagate into a Speeze enclosure that I have had for a long time, and the file unrared fine (I also did md5 checksums on the .rar and the checksum changed to the correct value) this was very confusing to me so I did some more tests by changing the usb port it was plugged into, and the usb cable, with the same results.

so I am ready to rma this Vantec POS 🙂| grrrr) but before I do I was wondering if anybody has any experience with the same problem, or maybe a solution other than rma'ing .. as I said this is the second enclosure I've tried so either I am doing something wrong or lightning has struck twice 😕

edit: any recommendations for another enclosure are also welcome

What are the specs on the rest of your system?

I had a similar problem with a USB enclosure when connected to my PC (based on an Abit NF7 motherboard). After a year of being unable to use my enclosure, Abit released a BIOS update, and the problem was fixed.

While I wouldn't rule out a problem with the enclosure, I would first test it on a seperate PC - ask a friend to test it if you don't have access to a 2nd PC.
