Reinstalled windowsXP on an 80 gig sata harddrive; my 160 gig ata100 drive (used only for storage of mp3s, videos, etc.) was hooked up to computer when installing. Computer ran fine for quite sometime until I finished installing WinXP updates. Now the system stalls on first boot then I have to cold boot it to the WinXP start screen for either safe mode, last known, etc....

Then it usually takes. But I have to do this everytime. I tried unplugging the 160 gig harddrive but it does nothing until I plug it back in? Is there someway that something was written to this drive for winXP to start even though I told the computer to install winXP to 80 gig hd?

What gives.

A thought, add/remove programs, click show updates at the top. Remove those updates & try again, the 160 disconnected.

I didn't disconnect the 160 gig harddrive as that doesn't bother me as long as the computer starts the first time which it did when I did as you said with deleting the most recent updates.

Thanks for your help I really wasn't in the mood to reformat again anytime soon until I get a larger hd.
