Harddrive appears as USB ???

Hi all..

I wonder why my SATA II harddrives now appear as USB drives ??

SATA I drives, which i used earlier didnt show like that, but now every SATA II drive has the "removed safely" like any other USB attached devices.

Why ??

My understanding (from reading the forums here and other places since I don't own SATA drives) is the SATA drives are supposed to be hot-swappable. That's why you get that notification.
 
Everything that can be removed while the system runs gets listed in the "Safe Removal" applet - not just USB devices.

phatrabt has it correct - these SATA drives are on hot swap capable SATA interfaces, and thus, they appear in the applet.

Don't be confused, it's all how it's supposed to be. (Except maybe that XP is stupid enough to even offer the system volume drive for removal - but then will refuse to actually do it when you try.)

hrmmm... My OS is installed on a new Raptor and I was wondering this question myself. I was wondering what would happen if i tried to 'safely remove' it since my OS was on it, but I guess I know now... I still wouldn't try it me thinks 😉
 
Not to worry as has been explained. My system thinks they are SCSI! 🙂

That's what Windows does when you're using IDE or SATA drivers that aren't Microsoft's own.

What happens is you get a "Device is in use and cannot currently be removed" message, with a recommendation to try again later. Of course, the Windows system volume is never not being used and you can try as often and as late as you like 😉
