HardDisk speed problem

I have a new Maxtor 6Y080L0 80 Gb and im having some problems when burning cd's...
All my games run fine, i can quickly copy files, "heavy" jobs like unpacking large files are fast. But when i try to burn a cd, when i do the speed test, the max reading speed is 24x (im using nero) My cdrw is a samsung 40-12-40, but the problem is in the HD!
I have a xp 2400, 512 mb ram, plenty of free space in the HD and i have no partitions.
Any suggestions? Why is this happening?
Are there any programs that run benchmarks on the HD?

Edited: My motherboard is an Asus A7N8X, the HD is Primary master and the Cdr is Secondary Master, i also have a second HD as primary slave and a dvd rom as secondary slave.

Yes, i have DMA enabled in the HD's, and disabled on the cdr, should i enable it in the cdr?

I have no idea, but the computer is new so it probabily is.

A detail.. ive done some tests and, in my home LAN, i can up things easily @ 8 mb/s , that means that the HD can read faster than 24x (16xx KB/s) quite easily...

are the HD and cdrw drive on the same channel?
if they are, you wanna move the HD to the primary channel and the CDRW to the secondary channel because IDE sux0rs when it comes to sharing the channel when both devices are sending/receiving data

Most curtainly want to DMA both drives
Direct memory access will fix error on is on is not that means one is slower than the other causing info to bottle neck as you burn
