Harddisk making small 'ping' noise when writing files

My 250 GB IDE harddisk Seagate, around 2 years old is making a small 'plink' noise whenever I write a file to it, like saving a small image from the net.

It is not my primary harddisk, which is a 500 GB SATA. I have sata and ide on the same motherboard.

I dont remember this noise previously having noticed it a couple of days back.

Is this a sign of impending failure?

Not necessarily. You can try running Seagate's Seatools diagnostic on it and do a SMART check. Even though those are not perfect, they are likely to spot a problem if it exists.

it is probably one of the heads skipping on the platter, or a possibility of the heads tapping against the platter drum.

I'd definitely run a thorough diagnostic on the drive.
