I'm debating pulling the chevy 229 engine from my jeep this summer and having it bored and then putting it back in. Its undrivable now since it fouls the plugs within 30 miles! So in your area what would it cost to have a 6 cylinder bored like 30 over, rods straightened, etc? I've already had teh heads down but the bottom end needs work. I'm betting I could get the machining and parts for like $600......

Its been a couple years since I had it done to my 390 but I think it was like $80 a cylinder for the bore job. I can't remember how much the other stuff cost but it wasn't a whole lot. I remember I paid just at $1000 and I had everything done except for having them put it together. That includes buying all the parts for the bottem end except the cam.

Why not build up a new engine (used block?) with some nice parts, then sell off the old one?
That way you could have your jeep in commission the whole time....

heck, you could buy a new short block for about the price of rebuilding that one and get a warranty. did you think about that? I know the local discount auto runs about $750 for a SBC (small block chevy for the non-car guys) short bock exchange (you give them your old short block)

For $600 I would think you'd be close to the price of a short block which has a warranty.. Check it out.

I'd check a local junk yard about a trade for a 305, or maybe even a newer 4.0 jeep engine. Shouldn't cost much for the swap.

I might have to do that about checking into a prebuilt bottom end, I'm trying to do it on a budget though since I'm very poor right now :) Actually the idea engine for my swap that would mate up with no mods would be a smallblock 350........but then my rear axle might not be strong enough, etc....

I had a '79 Chevy Malibu that had a 229 that burned more oil than gas. I replaced it with a 4.3 liter V6 out of a GMC truck. It was a direct bolt-in. I was advised not to rebuild the 229 by the guys at the local machine shop.

My friend contemplated doing the same thing. He had an 86 Jeep Wrangler and decided that it was more trouble than anything. Besides degrading fuel economy, he found a wealth of problems with his weak transmission and what not.

What kind of jeep do you have?

1980 CJ5, so it does have a tougher transfer case than the 86 most likeley and stuff but the amc20 rear end is notorious for spinning its 2 piece axleshafts :)
