Would a Thermaltake Hardcano 13 Fan Controller support a Vantec 92mm Tornado or does the Tornado draw too much power?

Just a warning: the Vantec Tornado is a loud fan. I have one collecting dust in my garage. Even on my fan bus turned all the way down, it was too loud, even with headphones on. I did not listen to my friends and reviews that said it is loud. IT IS LOUD! Just so you know. ;)

Panflo is a great option if you want something that will move a lot of air without the noise.

Just read the specfiications on the fan. Amperes x Volts = watts. Most fans draw less than 1 watt and less than 1 ampere (amp). Just do not plug a fan of that size and rpm in to the motherboard and you should be fine should be fine since it will most likely exceed the curret draw specfication of the motherbard. I would recomend a rheostat (aka fanbus) for somthing of this speed for several reasons:

A rheostat will cut down on the amount of current being drawn by the fan. If you want to monitor the fan using the motherboard cheap adapters are avaleble that use a molex for the power and have a speical rpm senceing lead coming from the fan that alows for rpm monitoring.

Air when being blown in to a heat sink at such close proximityby a fan that can displace as much air as the torando will create some backpressure.

here are the specifications from vanteusa.com for the 92mm tornado:

TD9238H
92X92X38 mm
187 g
12V
12.5 W
1.0 Amp
4800 RPM
119 CFM
56.4 dB(A)
Double Ball Bearing

Is that backpressure bad? Also, some guy at ExtremeOverclocking said that he was able to run the Tornado on high with the Hardcano 13, yet when he turned it down, the Hardcano died. Is this a coincidence that it happened to die? Or will this happen on mine too, if I use a Tornado?

Probably, so my advise is dont use a CrapCano from thermaltake. Instead use something that relies on Rheostats for voltage control and stay away from anything digital, because you are only asking for trouble.

I would imagine, as long as you do not exceed its rated capacity. I will get some Specs later or you can find them yourself.

No If its it the same one i am looking at, it does not have a rheostat. Look for a rheostat on them, if they have a digital display then it likely does not have a RHEOSTAT or Potentiometer.

Can you give me a link to the one you are looking at. THANKS.

A sunbeam Rheobus will safely handle the load of a 92mm Vantec Tornado.

The sunbeam can handle up to
20 watts per fan/ channel
1.67 amperes for each knob or 20watts
any thing higher will cause failure and may result in a fire.

the tornado is rated at a maximum of 12.5watts and 1.0 amperes
so this is a good match.

If you are looking for a highspeed, high quality fan I think DELTA EHE or SHE line is a Great choice. The quality of those fans made my mouth drop the first time i saw one.

PS one more thing, I like the idea of reverse mounting a fan bus- mounting it so the knobs face twords the CPU and that way they cannot be bumped accidentaly once they have been set.

What is all this bumping you are doing? What the #@$!@ do you mean?

I really like the Sunbeam Rheobus, I have been meaning to look @ getting one of those. I had the Vantec Nexus and I did not like it much. pretty cheap, and no option to turn fans off, just slow them down.

I have a nexus Controller from vantec and a couple tornados (80's and 92's. the controllers works fine. My suggestion is to find one of the smaller ones that go in a 3.5" Floppy drive bay. I have one of the bigger ones that use a 5.25 bay. One thing is that the tornados are LOUD but after awhile you get use to the noise, or just loose your hearing, what ever comes first.

My suggestion is if you are using it to cool a CPU just buy a better heatsink and either buy a case with a CPU duct to draw cool air from outside the case or mod the and create your own CPU duct, like I did. your ears will thank you latter.

In reallity if you create a CPU duct and get a good heatsink and a decent fan you should be fine...My temps are same if not lower with my CPU duct than when I used a tornado, Infact my CPU runs 3-5 degrees C cooler than the rest of my system at Idle. right now my temps are CPU 29 degrees C, Case 34 degrees C. That is with a 2" CPU duct drawing cool air from outside the case and I am OC by 200Mhz (not a fast OC but my RAM is limmiting me)

my 2 cents

Hey, that is wonderful! But the Rheobus is a better quality design, and can tolerate a higher electrical load.

Well I only have 4 case fans anyways. And the 3.5 Nexus is the only rheobus that can support a Tornado that allows the doors of my case to close.
