Hard To Tell Your Burners Without A Scorecard!

Just bought a TDK VeloCD 24X burner. Was gonna sell my Plextor 161040A to help pay for it. After research, I've decided to keep the Plextor and return the unopened retail TDK. From all I've read, my Plextor may be a little faster.

There are so many burners out there, so I could be wrong, but is there any burner that really beats the Plextor 161040A right now? Any advice would be appreciated and thanks.

Check for benchmarks and user comments at CDSpeed2000. Click on the "Test results" tab.

Depending on what you are doing, you might be happiest with a good burner like the Plextor and a good fast cdrom like the Teac 540E. A 24X burner won't do you much good if you mostly do CD to CD copying and the CDROM can only put stuff out at 8X or even 4X. (Be sure to check the DAE results if you want to copy audio CDs -- a lot of drives that are fast for data copying are not so fast for audio copying.) Also, I wonder how many blank CDR disks can reliably burn at 24X? The highest ratings I have seen in stores is 16X.

As for me, I'll take Plextor any day, even if some drive is nominally faster, because I've had such good luck with the brand. If sticking with the Plextor is a "mistake", it is probably one of the least bad mistakes you'll ever make in your life.

I love my plextors... I also have an older Ricoh... don't know if I would recommend them right now, have heard that they are discontinuing US sales and support on this product line.

Fargus, is it Plextor or Ricoh you heard was discontinuing US sales and support? And how sure are you? I certainly hope it is not Plextor.
