My dermo sucks, she is totally unfriendly and rude. Needless to say i will be switching to a new dermotologist shortly.... I tried asking her this, but she could care less about my questions...

I did have a question those to those who might know... I get random pimples on my face (usually either on my upper cheek under my eye, or down around my neck). I don't get very many, maybe 1-2 a month, but they usually are VERY bad and painful. For instance, i have one on the right side of my neck right now, the actual pimple is maybe 1cm in diameter, but the area below and around is that is hard and painful is nearly 1". I can literally grab the hard area and feel where its swollen, it seems to extend nearly 1/2" in all directions, effectively making a 1" diameter circle.

WTF is this? I've been using a salytic acid facewach for months and it dosent seem to help. She recently perscribed me Cleocin T even though i requested something else. My brother was on it years ago and developed Ulcerative Colitis a few months later. Probably coincidental, but it is listed as a side effect of the drug, so i'm staying away.

Anyone had this before?

I get those on my chin once in a while, and for me they are in-grown hairs. If you shave, make sure to shave with the grain to avoid them.

Once they get big enough to pop, pop 'em. A speck of blood/scab on your face is more attractive than a massive mountain with a sickly puss-colored peak in the middle.

Is it possible that these areas are places that you rest your hands on when supporting your head? Do you find yourself touching these areas more than others for some reason or another? That will raise the probability considerably of you developing all sorts of crap there because of the transfer from your hands throughout the day.

If not, it could be a shaving issue or something with your soap. I suggest also trying an abrasive "glove" to wash your face and neck with that shreds away dry skin in order to promote proper oil production and prevent dry skin from holding bacteria and oils against your healthy skin. You should be able to get those pretty much anywhere that sells girly face sh!t. ;) But use it anyway, it's better than nasty gigantic pustules all over those areas. ;)

I get those on rare occasions. It's like the pimple forms so far below the surface that it can't be popped so it can go away.

My method is to try to draw blood from the pimple. Maybe some ice will help to numb it, because it might hurt like hell. The scab that forms can act to help rip away more skin or hopefully the core of the pimple. Once that happens, the swelling starts to go away.

Adam Carolla told a story once of a boil in his nether region. He laid down in front of a full length mirror, pulled his knees to his chest, bounced a flashlight into the mirror onto his ass and popped it with a needle. Yes, near his exit.

@aphex: try using germx/similar/alcohol on them each day (rub them plenty with it), this way, they go away much faster, or perhaps you would prefer 10% benzoyl peroxide -- your call. Both work for me when/if I need them.

about the pain -- just numb the spot with something if it bothers you enough, simple.

don't mess with it. keep it clean and put a hot washcloth on it whenever you can. wash it whenever you can with antibacterial soap and hot water. don't scrub it. be patient...

don't pinch at it. don't grab it. don't rub it or pick at it. it'll only make it worse. try forgetting about it. don't use that acid stuff... use a cream with benzoyl peroxide in it.

DON'T lance it with a needle or anything. if you were going to lance it, you'd need a sterile syringe needle. you DON'T use a sewing needle or pin or anything. you can bath it in boiling water and alcohol all you want, but it will still have bacteria on there that might cause an infection. the only way you'd get away with lancing it yourself is if you had some antibiotics handy to fight staph.

it'll go away within about 5 days.

benzoyl peroxide in a white cream = looks weird.

try germx/similar or some kind of alcohol - personally, I rub it with some pressure and until it feels devoid of skin oil (dry).

generally I would do this once a day, you could try more if its a phat one that you would prefer not to pop (or pop it later once it has shrunken acceptably).

do experiment, find what you prefer most.

if it doesn't for you then try something else, like I said -

do what you prefer.

Sounds like you are getting acne cysts. Basically, it's just a big inflamed/infected area under the visible pimple. Under no circumstances should you lance or squeeze them. It could rupture under the skin, leading to a nasty infection. If they bother you enough, you can get a cortizone injection from a dermatologist that will clear it up within a day. Unfortunatley, this treatment can sometimes leave a scar. Other than that, the best treatment is to continue your normal acne treatment with diligence. In addition, if you don't do the cortisone, heat will promote better blood flow allowing them to soften and heal more quickly.

Again, under no circumstances should you squeeze or lance it. Use heat, or get a cortisone injection.

I used to get acne alot but then I started using Antibacterial soap on my face. I usually use the soft hand soap. When my skin starts gettin oily or if I sweat alot that day I will just lather some antibacterial hand soap and lightly scrub then rinse and pat dry with a damp washcloth. It has been one of the best things to keep the acne at bay for me. Also, one of the major causes of acne is being overly acidic. I know it sounds kind of weird but if you use something like liquid maloxx you can apply it to the skin and let it dry and it will form a mask and usually helps to sooth the skin due to the antacid. Hope this helps I know it worked wonders for me.

Picking, squeezing, and needles are all no nos that could lead to a bad infection and cause irrepairble damage.

I currently use the Neutrogena line of facial care products. I'll eventually resort to the Clinique line of Men's Facial Care Products.
