Hi,

I am looking to buy a new hard drive, probably a 60GB one. I definately want ATA 133 and 7200RPM. I also would like the seek time to be as low as possible for a good price. I decided to look on pricewatch, and I found these things called "white label" hard drives. What exactly is this? I have also seen hard drives that are "OEM", which I understand, but is that the same, does OEM=White Label??? Also, one of the websites called it a Generic hard drive. But in the description it would say Maxtor White Label. Now isn't that a contradiction. How can it be a Generic harddrive and a Maxtor one at the same time? I have also seen Western Digital White Label. I am just a little confused, so if anyone could shed any light on this situation it would be great.

Also, what is everyone's general prefrence. What brand? Assuming you don't want to spend a lot of money, would you go for a white label, OEM, or Retail hard drive? And if so, how much price difference would you be ok with? I mean would you pay an extra $20 just to go from white label to retail? Would you pay $10 to go from white label to OEM, etc.? I am trying to spend around $60 for a 60GB hard drive, which from what I can tell is resonable, since most people have told me, that now days it is about $1 for every 1GB. But I definately don't want to spend $60, and get a hard drive that dies after a year. So anyone opinions would be great. Thanks.

I would recommend not looking on pricewatch for hds. Instead look at a good online dealer such as newegg or googlegear. I have never heard of white label but personally I would pay extra for a hd from a respectable store.

The hard drive is one of the most important parts of your machine. Don't cut costs by going with a questionable drive. Get a name-brand drive (OEM or retail, but avoid white label) from a reputable dealer (Newegg, Mwave, Googlegear, etc...).
