Hard Drives: WD, IBM, Maxtor? 2MB vs 8MB Cache?

I'm in the market for a new hard drive
I was thinking of a WD, since I heard IBMs are falling apart lately.

this is what I was thinking:
80.0 GB
7200 RPM
ATA 100 or 133

so the choice comes down to a 2MB cache or an 8MB cache, and $12 difference (the 800BB WD is $97 at newegg, the 800JB is $109)

so what does this cache really do? it makes the drive faster, or so I've heard. please correct me if I'm wrong, or give me alternatives.

I want something that will last me for a while til serial ata is widespread and I can afford to upgrade to that.

I would get the 8MB cache model. It does increase the access speed of the drive (for a more detailed explanation search this forum, many people can explain it far better than I can). As far as Serial ATA, right now the only difference is interface, not bandwidth, so you won't be hurt by buying one of the WD's (you can always attach a Serial ATA adapter).

but then again the WDs are NOT THAT reliable anyway. Seen quite a few failing these days too, same as the IBM. But with IBM, you can't do anything wrong RMA wise. They are good, and chances are good that you will get a better driver (bigger or later model, like a guy who got a 120 GXP for his 60 GXP which was replacement for a 75 GXP (75, 60, 120 from old to new)). WD I don't know. The IBM are really fast, but make an anoying noise (to most) every 15 minutes. Prefer the 8 MB model, its faster. StorageReview.com if you want to check. Don't go with Matrox. Very bad RMA, and don't say these never fail. Seagate is good, but the performance is just ok. But then, its silence and probably reliable. Anyway, don't forget your regular (VERY REGULAR incase of IBM and WD 🙂 ) backups, prefered mirror important data to an other more reliable hdd (just an old 10 gigger will prolly do...).

Ps: I've been tending to the IBMs... fast, good RMA and damn cheap 🙂

WD's aren't reliable at all, I have gotten two of them, both broke down. IMO, Maxtor and SeaGate are the best.

"Don't go with Matrox."

Matrox makes video cards, Maxtor is the company that makes Hard Drives 😀

Couldn't agree more🙂

All HD's fail after a while, even Motrax. My IBM 60GXP failed after just 9 months, therefore I would recommend anything but. The Martox is marginal, but the WD is getting good reviews. I'd go with the WD if I had to do it all again...stay away from the IBM and Maxrot😀

The WDs are just fine. I've heard more complaints against the Maxtor's, actually. Especially the fluid bearing drives. Do you all have a nice 80 mm fan blowing across your HDDs?

thanks for the info, i totally forgot about storagereview
i havent had much cash in a while, so i kinda faded outta the hardware scene 😉

i think i'm gonna go with the WD 800JB
i already have the 600BB, its very nice also, been workin flawlessly 24/7 for > 1.5 years

thanks again.
