Hard Drives Not Booting

How long do Hard Drives usually last? My Maxtor 40Mb drive will not boot at all. I can't believe that it would die already but it could be power supply related problem too. Any suggestions? When I go into setup it can't dectect the drive and states - Recommend Replace drive. So many thing lost! Ugh!
