My friends dell's CPU went and his HDD is cluttered... so I asked if I could use it until he receives a new CPU, I said' I'd reformatt and install Win XP etc. But... He has tons of movies/songs etc. that he doesnt want deleted in his shared folder... The problem is when I startup the computer with the HDD in it days Dell.Com in blue and gives me and error... And I I plug the IDE in when im on my desktop nothing happens... Is there anyway to do this? The HDD is:

40GIG Seagate
7200 RPM out of his Dell

Note: I'm not trying to boot off this HDD, but it wont let me make it so it boots off mine and not his, I have all my jumpers set to Custom and I have the IDE's hooked up correctly... I dont see the problem... I just need ot transfer this data. Anyone help?

Holy smokes, do NOT hot-plug the IDE connectors while the computer is running!!! :Q Put the other hard drive on the cable that your CD-ROM has been using and leave the CD-ROM unplugged for now.
